About The Women of Achievement Awards

The YWCA has honored women in our community for the past 33 years. These women embody the mission of the YWCA by giving generously of themselves to make Spokane a better place for all of its citizens to live. They demonstrate leadership through their professional work or service to the community, in one or more of the following categories:

• Arts and Culture
• Business & Industry
• Carl J. Maxey Racial & Social Justice Award
• Community Enhancement
• Education
• Science,Technology & Environment

Our 2015 Women of Achievement Awards Keynote Speaker is Cheryl Strayed author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Wild, which tells the amateur hiker’s tale as she struggles to find inner peace and stability during her 1,000-mile journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. Her story was featured as Oprah Winfrey’s first selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0, and inspired the 2014 release of the movie adaptation of Wild. She is also the author of The New York Times bestseller Tiny Beautiful Things and the critically acclaimed novel Torch. Her books have been translated into almost thirty languages around the world. Strayed’s writing has appeared in The Best American Essays, The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Allure, The Missouri Review, Creative Nonfiction, The Sun and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in fiction writing from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota.
